GTA under rainfall warning as storm system moves into region

Environment Canada put much of the Greater Toronto Area under a rainfall warning early Tuesday as a “moisture laden” storm system moves into the region.

Parts of the GTA could see in excess of 50 mm of rain, though there is still a high degree of uncertainty in the forecast, the federal weather agency said.

Rainfall is anticipated to begin in the late afternoon or evening and continue through to Wednesday morning before tapering off.

“The showers are expected to become more widespread and heavy at times tonight along with the risk for thunderstorms as a more unstable air mass moves in,” Environment Canada said.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible,” the warning continued.
