Wrangler head coach Cull takes on temporary assistant role with Flames
The Calgary Flames coaching staff got a shakeup Sunday when Wranglers head coach Trent Cull was asked to take over as an assistant on a temporary basis.
Due to family reasons, assistant coach Brad Larsen has taken an indefinite leave of absence since Dec.8.
Cull, who is in his second season as the Wrangler bench boss, will fill in in the meantime. He has coached in the AHL for 15 years and previously served as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks in 2022-23.
“Our priority is to provide Brad and his family with continued support during this period when they need it most,” said Flames General Manager Craig Conroy.
“While Brad remains with his family, we have made these interim adjustments to our coaching staff to ensure our team and development program have the resources required to excel.,” Conroy added “Our organizational bench strength allows us to confidently make these moves without interruption to performance.”
While Cull is absent, Joe Cirella takes over the Wranglers’ bench. Cirella will be joined by Martin Gelinas and Brent Sutter as assistants. Cirella has over 20 years coaching experience in the OHL and AHL. Gelinas has been a member of the Flames development staff for four years and was a Flames assistant coach from 2012-21.
