Manitoba RCMP arrest, charge 22-year-old in connection to Mathias Colomb Cree Nation shooting

Mounties in northern Manitoba nabbed a suspect in connection to a shooting on a First Nation last weekend.

Pukatawagan RCMP arrested and charged Austin Castel with several offences, and recovered the firearm believed was used in a shooting in Mathias Colomb Cree Nation, according to a Wednesday police news release.

An arrest warrant was issued for the 22-year-old suspect for his ties to one of two shooting incidents around 4 a.m. Saturday in the community, which is located about 700 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

The 36-year-old victim went to the community’s nursing station with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

He told RCMP that he had been threatened by a man inside the vehicle with four other people after being offered a ride. Following a fight, the man shot a gun, a previous police news release said.

The victim escaped, while the two other men and two women in the vehicle were not injured, according to Mounties.

A 16-year-old boy also faces eight charges in connection to the shooting, including discharging a firearm with intent.

Castel has been remanded into custody.
