Man dead after shooting in downtown Toronto, police say

A man has died after he was shot in downtown Toronto on Wednesday night, police say.

The shooting happened in the area of Sherbourne Street and Queen Street E., according to Duty Insp. Scott Shutt, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service. Officers were called to the area for a report for a shooting shortly after 8 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from a serious gunshot wound. Police and Toronto paramedics began to perform life-saving measures, he said.

Paramedics rushed the man in life-threatening condition to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His age has not been released.

“This investigation is now a homicide,” Shutt told reporters.

“Obviously, any time a shooting happens in a community, it’s very concerning. I would say I don’t believe there is any threat to the public at this time,” he added.

Shutt said the shooter fled the area and police don’t believe there was a vehicle involved. Officers are searching for the suspect, canvassing the area and speaking to witnesses, he said.

No suspect description has been released.

Police said their homicide unit is investigating. The emergency task force, guns and gangs unit and canine unit were at the scene on Wednesday night.

Roads are closed in the area as officers investigate.

Anyone who witnessed anything or who may have video relevant to the investigation is being asked to come forward to police.
