Classes cancelled at St. Boniface school due to fire likely caused by overheated outlet

Classes have been cancelled at an elementary school in St. Boniface because of a fire.

Winnipeg firefighters responded to a fire alarm at Marion School in the Louis Riel School Division around 6:10 a.m. on Wednesday.

There was smoke coming from the school on Des Meurons Street when firefighters arrived.

They put out a fire in an office, a news release said on Wednesday.

No one was in the school and no injuries were reported, the news release said.

Damages were primarily to a single office.

Preliminary investigation suggests the fire started because of an overheated electrical outlet that had a portable space heater plugged into it, firefighters said.

Families with children who attend the school should check their email for updates, the release said.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service reminds people that space heaters should be turned off or unplugged whenever a person leaves the room. Space heaters should be at least three feet away from anything that can burn and should be plugged into an outlet instead of an extension cord.
