Calgary officer charged with aggravated assault, careless use of firearm following ASIRT probe

A Calgary officer has been charged after an investigation by Alberta’s police watchdog into an incident where he shot a man in a parking lot in northwest Calgary in December 2022.

Const. Christopher Huggins, a 10-year member of the force, has been charged with aggravated assault and careless use of a firearm.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said the evidence led investigators to conclude the officer had committed offences.

Huggins was released on an undertaking and will make a first appearance in court on March 21.

“The charged officer is afforded the right to a fair trial, the same as any member of the public,” reads a statement from the Calgary Police Service.

“As is standard protocol, his duty status will be reviewed in light of these charges.”

ASIRT investigates any time someone is injured or killed due to police actions in Alberta. It also investigates credible claims of police misconduct.
