Alberta’s police oversight body is investigating a police shooting in Calgary Friday night that sent a man to hospital with serious injuries.
Around 10 p.m., Calgary police were called to the 1500 block of 35th Street S.E., in the Radisson Heights area, after residents reported a man was carrying weapons and acting erratically, police said.
Police encountered the man when they arrived on scene, but the “rapidly changing dynamics” of the situation led to an officer firing their gun, police said.
The man received medical care at the scene, but paramedics sent him to hospital in critical but stable condition.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the shooting, Calgary police say.
Per Alberta’s Police Act, ASIRT investigates events where serious injury or death may have been caused by police, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct, such as sexual assault and obstruction of justice.
