Man found dead in southeast Calgary a victim of homicide

Calgary police say the death of a man who was found at a home in southeast Calgary on Monday morning has been deemed a homicide.

In a news release sent on Tuesday, police said one man is in custody and charges are pending.

The victim has been identified as Joel Aaron Clark, 46, of Calgary, after an autopsy was completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Tuesday.

It marks the city’s sixth homicide of 2024.

Police were called to a home in the 300 block of Prestwick Terrace S.E. at about 8:25 a.m. on Monday for a reported assault, officials said in an earlier release.

On arrival officers found one man dead.

A suspect had fled the scene before police arrived.

Police found the man about 45 minutes later at a nearby shopping plaza.

Victim, accused known to each other

Duty Insp. Scott Campbell said it’s believed the victim and suspect are known to each other but didn’t elaborate on the relationship.

Police say they are not looking for other suspects.

According to Campbell, there were others in the home at the time of the incident who called 911 and are being interviewed by investigators.

Out of an “abundance of caution,” Campbell says MacKenzie Towne School was under a brief lockdown after the suspect fled the crime scene into the community.

The lockdown was lifted after about 30 minutes.
