Child taken to hospital after being bitten by police dog in southeast Calgary

A young girl was taken to hospital after she was bitten by an on-duty Calgary police service dog on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the incident.

The incident occurred just before 3 p.m. as officers were responding to reports of a stolen vehicle in the southeast community of Erin Woods.

Police say officers were searching a field in the area when the child was bitten by the dog. She was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“Due to the traumatic nature of this incident, the CPS is providing support to the child and her family,” reads a release sent by the Calgary Police Service on Wednesday afternoon.

CPS said it will fully cooperate with the ASIRT investigation, according to the release.
