Expect pipes to burst as weather warms, says Calgary-based plumbing company

A local plumbing company says it anticipates responding to more burst pipes as Calgary warms up following weeks of frigid temperatures.
Daniel Thiessen, co-owner of Pete the Plumber, says any time the city experiences a wild temperature swing, there is a risk of pipes bursting.
“It’s not when it happens just for a day that we usually see much. It’s when we get this deep freeze that lasts for … say up to a week or even more,” Thiessen said.
Along with burst pipes, he says his business often gets calls about plugged exhausts or intakes for furnaces, boilers or water heaters when the weather drastically changes from cold to mild.
“Any time we get more than –20 for an extended period of time, it does wreak havoc on the mechanical systems in people’s houses.”
When dealing with frozen pipes in the home, he recommends people do what they can to apply heat to the area, but plumbers won’t be able to do much until they thaw.
“When it thaws, that split in the pipe allows water to come out of it, right? So that’s usually when we see our surge of calls is actually during the thaw, for water leaking,” he said.
“We always have a few plumbers available for our 24-hour service. They’ll probably deal with a lot of that this weekend.”
Sclater Paterson, leader of operational performance in drinking water distribution for the City of Calgary, says water main breaks are common in Calgary.
“On average, we get between 20 to 40 main breaks a month. Sometimes all of a sudden we get five or six come in within a 24-hour period,” he said.
Water main breaks are not typically due to the weather, though, Paterson says.
“Our pipes are below frost line, so typically the frost won’t impact our pipes unless it’s a really, really cold year,” he said. “However, in the wintertime, we do usually see more water main breaks than the summertime.”
Paterson says that when a water main breaks, the city usually repairs it within 48 hours.
