City of Winnipeg looks for consultant to help in search for new CAO

The City of Winnipeg is a step closer to finding a new top civil servant, after posting a request for a consultant to help find a new chief administrative officer.

Former CAO Michael Jack resigned in June, less than a week after an audit criticized the city for failing to review staff properly and measure their progress toward key city goals.

The CAO oversees all of the day-to-day operations of the city.

The city’s request for proposals states it’s seeking a consultant with a track record of finding “diverse and qualified candidates.”

The consultant will also be expected to talk to members of the business community and “leaders of large, diverse organizations comparable in size and scope to the City of Winnipeg.”

The consultant hired will work with a hiring committee “to conduct an extensive, professional search process to identify and attract the best candidate for the role,” the city said in a news release.

The committee consists of Mayor Scott Gillingham and councillors Janice Lukes (Waverley West), Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan), Ross Eadie (Mynarski) and Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan).

The city did not indicate a timeline for when it expects to make a decision.
