Alberta, Wood Buffalo officials to give wildfire updates Thursday

Government and fire officials will give an update on Alberta’s wildfire situation Thursday morning.

Forestry and Parks Minister Todd Loewen will be up first at 9:30 a.m.

At 10:30 a.m., Emergency Management Director Chief Jody Butz, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Mayor Sandy Bowman and Alberta Wildfire information officer Josee St-Onge will speak in Fort McMurray.

As of 8:45 a.m., there were 44 active wildfires in Alberta with one burning out of control: the 20,000-hectare wildfire near Fort McMurray.

That wildfire, dubbed MWF-017, has forced the evacuation of four neighbourhoods.

Evacuation centres have been set up in Lac La Biche, Cold Lake and Edmonton. Officials say evacuees won’t be allowed to return home until at least Tuesday.
