2 dead after suspicious house fire in Mississauga
Two people are dead and another two injured after a house fire in Mississauga that is being investigated as suspicious, emergency services say.
Crews responded to a home on Bromsgrove Road, near Winston Churchill Boulevard and Royal Windsor Drive, around 3 a.m. Tuesday.
According to Mississauga Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi, two people without vital signs were rescued from bedrooms on the second floor of the residence.
Two other people were able to escape the blaze by themselves, Rizzi said, and were on the front lawn of the home when firefighters arrived. One of those people had serious burns to their body, Rizzi added.
All four people who had been in the home were taken to hospital. Of the four, one person was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, while another died later Tuesday morning.
Peel paramedics said earlier that the patients included two men and two women, one of whom is elderly.
No further details about the two people who died were provided by firefighters or police.
A dog and cat were also removed from the house. The dog died, Rizzi said, while the cat was uninjured.
Rizzi said the investigation was transferred to Peel police after firefighters reported “multiple points of origin in the home with significant fire damage,” leading them to believe the blaze may have begun under suspicious circumstances.
Police are investigating the blaze alongside the Ontario Fire Marshal.
“The cause of the fire is unknown at this point, Peel Regional Police is treating this as suspicious. All possibilities are being considered as a part of the investigation,” the service said in a statement.
Bromsgrove Road was closed between Cramer Street and Winston Churchill Boulevard. Emergency crews are expected to be on scene for “quite sometime,” police said.
