Edmonton man dies from ‘medical event’ while being arrested, police say

A man is dead following a “medical event” suffered in police custody, after he reportedly threatened another resident in his apartment building, Edmonton police said Friday.
Around 7 p.m. Thursday, the Edmonton Police Service was called to an apartment building near 103A Avenue and 95th Street, in the Boyle Street neighbourhood, after receiving a report that a man armed with a weapon had threatened another building resident, said an EPS news release.
Responding officers found the man had barricaded himself in his apartment. Police obtained a search warrant, but a “confrontation” occurred with the 60-year-old man before he was arrested, the release said.
He was receiving medical attention at the scene when the health emergency happened, said the news release.
Michael Ewenson, executive director of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), confirmed to CBC News that the agency is investigating the incident.
ASIRT, the province’s main police oversight agency, investigates events where police actions may have caused serious injury or death, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
EPS did not specify in its release what type of weapon the man may have had.
Members of Edmonton’s tactical emergency medical services team, a paramedic team that primarily helps the EPS tactical unit, were treating the man when he suffered the medical issue, the release said.
First aid was immediately administered and the man was taken to hospital, where he was declared dead, it added.
EPS notified the province’s director of law enforcement, who directed ASIRT to investigate the incident, the release said.
ASIRT had no further information as of Friday afternoon, Ewenson said in an email. The agency will issue a news release in the coming days once further steps have been taken.
