Most photo radar being scrapped in urban locations in Alberta: memo

Photo radar programs in Alberta will adhere to a new set of guidelines before the end of the year.

A memo sent to Edmonton city council and obtained by CTV News Edmonton shows policy changes to photo radar enforcement were approved by the Alberta government earlier this year.

According to the memo, photo radar will no longer be allowed on provincial, numbered highways and roads connecting to highways, including Edmonton’s Anthony Henday Drive, Yellowhead Trail and Whitemud Drive.

Other changes include photo radar only being allowed in playground, school and construction zones. Additionally, red-light cameras will no longer be allowed to issue speed-related tickets.

Once the new guidelines are released, the provincial administration will perform a review to “identify key changes and impacts to the program, along with financial mitigation options,” read the memo written by Edmonton’s acting deputy city manager.

Administration is to provide council with more information about the impacts and recommend next steps.

The new guidelines are set to be released in December 2024.
