North London gas leak keeps kids at school while homes evacuated

Two gas leaks on a residential street north of Fanshawe Park Road forced the evacuation of 14 homes, closed streets and re-routed school pick up at a London elementary school Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to Philbrook Drive, west of Adelaide Street, and set up a perimeter just after 3 p.m. They said the source of the leak was not yet known, but that no one was in danger.

“We have evacuated some homes as a precaution,” said Acting Deputy Fire Chief, Jack Burt. “Most of the people were not home and only five had to leave.”

The evacuation order impacted after-school pick up for students at Jack Chambers Public School with parents being diverted to Hastings Drive. Students walking home were being kept at the school.

Traffic is blocked from Hastings Drive East to Stoneybrook Crescent and from Fanshawe Park Road to the north end of Phillbrook Drive near Repton Avenue.
