Memorial Drive to remain closed throughout morning as police incident remains a ‘significant threat’
A police situation that’s been ongoing since Thursday afternoon remains a significant threat to public and officer safety, Calgary police said.
During a press conference Friday where the incident was addressed, Supt. Joe Brar with the Calgary Police Service’s operational support division said officers are working to bring it to a peaceful resolution.
At around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, police said, shots were fired in the direction of tactical unit officers as they were executing a search warrant at a residence in the east Calgary community of Penbrooke Meadows.
There were no injuries.
Memorial Drive is closed between 52 Street S.E. and 68 Street S.E. and is expected to remain closed throughout Friday morning.
Residents of the Penbrooke area are asked to continue to shelter in place. Police said those who are unable to access their residences will not be able to do so until the situation is resolved.
The residence is located in the 300 block of Penswood Way S.E.
Brar said because of the dynamic nature and volatility of the situation, additional details could not be provided.
In a Friday morning post to X, formerly known as Twitter, Calgary police Chief Constable Mark Neufeld said the Alberta RCMP are also assisting police.
Calgary police said they will update the public on social media throughout the morning.
This situation remains volatile and is ongoing as anticipated. Excellent work by <a href=”https://twitter.com/CalgaryPolice?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>@CalgaryPolice</a> members through the night with assistance from <a href=”https://twitter.com/RCMPAlberta?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>@RCMPAlberta</a>.
