Fatal shooting at Calgary hotel a targeted incident, say police

A shooting Monday at a Calgary hotel that left one man dead is believed to have been a targeted incident, Calgary police now say.

The victim has been identified as Liban Abdirahman, 29, after an autopsy completed on Tuesday by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Investigators believe the incident “occurred in the suite where the man was found and presented no risk to other hotel guests,” according to a release sent Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they responded to a shots fired complaint at the Super 8 hotel on Shawville Road S.E. at around 3 p.m. on Monday.

Upon arrival, police said they located one man who was suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man was taken into custody, but police said he has since been released without charge and no other arrests have been made.

“Our homicide unit is in the process of speaking with witnesses, gathering information and reviewing CCTV footage,” said the release.
