1 man found without vital signs after fire east of downtown Ottawa
One person was found without vital signs following a fire east of downtown Ottawa Friday morning.
Firefighters were called to a home on Brittany Drive at around 10:30 a.m. for the blaze. A neighbour had called 9-1-1 to report smoke coming from one of the units of a rowhouse.
The 9-1-1 caller said they tried knocking on the door, but got no response.
David Matschke, Ottawa Fire Services Deputy Fire Chief of Urban Operations and Special Operations tells CTV News, “Within minutes, fire crews arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the unit, and entered to locate the fire. Once inside, firefighters found one victim, and removed the victim from the townhouse without any vital signs.”
“I got here after the fire started,” says Vanier resident Gilles Delinelle. “I saw fire fighters doing CPR for about 10 minutes, and going into the ambulance they were still doing CPR.”
Ottawa paramedics took the victim to hospital with life-threatening injuries. His current condition is not confirmed.
The fire was declared under control in about 30 minutes and flames did not spread to any of the neighbouring units.
Ottawa police and Ottawa Fire Services are investigating. Brittany Drive was closed for several hours. It reopened just before 5 p.m.
Ottawa Police Sgt. Santiago De Los Santos explains, “the investigation is on going what we know right now is that one person was injured as a result of that fire, but I’m sure more information will be made available as we move forward.”
