The Fox Theatre turns 110, credits supportive community

An east end gem is celebrating a milestone birthday this week. The Fox Theatre in the Beaches is turning 110. The theatre opened its doors in 1914 — and while it’s seen some changes — many love the space for its nostalgic charm.

“The Fox is almost like a personality in the neighbourhood these days,” said Andy Willick, one of the owners.

There’s only one 240-seat auditorium at The Fox Theatre. But Willick says the small space does much more for the community than screen movies.

“We’re trying to offer something outside of what you would get at a mainstream theatre,” he said.

Part of that includes showcasing and maintaining pieces of history; relics like old film reels and signage from the 1930s.

The wall that used to divide the smokers from the non-smokers still stands. The theatre also hosts several events and special screenings.

“Recently we’re starting to book more director Q&As, we’ve done a number of sing-alongs where people can sing in the actual theatre and we do kids video dance parties,” he said.

In addition to new releases, the theatre plays classic films and aims to give a voice to independent filmmakers.

Willick says at a time when many theatres are finding it a challenge to bring audiences back post pandemic, staff at The Fox feel grateful for the support from the community.

“We’re seeing people coming out in droves to the theatre, and we’ve had a really good year,” he said.

“It feels like we’re past the hard times.”

Willick says he hopes more people consider getting out to support their local independent theatre.

The Fox Theatre is hosting an open house from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday to celebrate the anniversary, followed by a special screening of Casablanca.
