Victim killed in daylight shooting in Toronto’s west end

A male victim is dead after a daylight shooting in Toronto’s west end.

Toronto police said there were reports at around 12:45 p.m. that one or more occupants of a vehicle shot at another vehicle.

Witnesses at the busy strip mall in Rexdale said they heard multiple gunshots on Thursday afternoon.

Officers arrived and located a victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Det. Sgt. Alan Bartlett told reporters on Thursday evening the incident was a “shooting homicide,” with the investigation in its early stages.

He said that someone inside one car shot at a man inside another. Bartlett said there was no evidence the victim returned fire.

Police said one or more suspects fled in a black two-door car westbound on Finch Avenue.

Bartlett said he believed there were two people in a dark Honda that fled the scene, potentially with damage to its right rear.

“We understand that a violent incident like the one that has happened here has a deep impact on the community and is incredibly jarring,” Bartlett said, appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Police have not said if they believe the incident was targeted or not.
