1 dead, 1 seriously injured in Etobicoke shooting, police say

One man is dead and another man is seriously injured after a shooting in Etobicoke on Tuesday, Toronto police say.

The shooting happened in an apartment building on Capri Road, near The East Mall and Rathburn Road. Police were called to the area at about 5:30 p.m.

Duty Insp. Phillip Sinclair, spokesperson for Toronto Police Service, described the victims as young men. He declined to provide their ages or to say whether they lived in the building.

“At this time, we believe several floors were involved,” he said.

People were returning home at the time of the shooting, he added.

Sinclair said when police arrived, they found the men with gunshot wounds. Officers began performing life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, he added.

Toronto paramedics took both men to hospital, one in critical condition and the other in serious but stable condition. The critically hurt man died in hospital.

Police said its homicide unit will take over the investigation and will provide further details.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, police said two masked suspects fled the scene.

Sinclair said the police consider the shooting to be a serious incident and would like to reassure the public that many resources are being deployed to find the shooters.

“At this time, we do understand this is a very concerning incident for the residents of the building, those affected and the rest of the community in the area. We do want to assure the public at this time that we are putting all the necessary resources in place to help to identify those responsible to solve this homicide,” he said.

Police will work with the city to provide support to residents, he said.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has relevant information is urged to come forward to police.
