2 inmates recaptured a day after escaping from prison in Gravenhurst, Ont.

Two fugitives have been recaptured one day after they escaped from a prison in Ontario’s Muskoka Region, according to the Correctional Service of Canada.

The agency said the two men, aged 68 and 70, had been “unlawfully at large” from the minimum-security unit at the federal Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst, Ont., since Wednesday.

Provincial police said the pair had fled in a grey sedan that picked them up around 1 p.m. ET from the prison. Police had described them as having a “violent criminal history.”

Correctional Service of Canada said staff members first noticed the two were missing during a 6:30 p.m. count.

The agency said the Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement and Toronto Police Service apprehended the fugitives on Thursday. Police say they were found at a Toronto-area hotel.

The agency said the 70-year old is serving an indeterminate sentence for first-degree murder, while the 68-year old is serving 15 years for robbery, forcible confinement and using an imitation firearm.

Correctional Service of Canada spokesperson Mike Shrider said in a news release on Thursday night that the agency and the prison will investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape.

“Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” Shrider said in the release.

Police had released photos and descriptions of the inmates and the Ontario Provincial Police warned the public not to approach them.

Earlier, Shrider had said in an emailed statement that escapes from federal institutions are rare.

Shrider had also said inmates who escape can be subject to a review of their security classification or additional charges.

Wednesday’s escape marks the second at the prison since January, when a 41-year-old man fled from the grounds before he was found by police two hours later.
