Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says it’s investigating after four people were seriously injured, including one suspect, following a vehicle crash and altercation involving several officers, Peel police say.
According to Const. Danny Martini, the initial incident happened around 9 a.m. on Saturday, when the male suspect, who was driving a car, crashed into another vehicle.
Martini said the man then fled the scene on foot.
Police then received a call around 9:20 a.m. for a medical assist at a residence on Holden Crescent in the area of Burnhamthorpe Road East and Cawthra Road, which was around the corner from the scene of the vehicle accident.
Martini says officers arrived at the residence to find the suspect, who had fled the scene of the accident, behind a shed on the property.
The man was wielding a knife, Martini said, and became involved in an altercation with officers.
An officer then shot the suspect, who was taken to hospital in custody.
Four police officers also received minor injuries in the altercation.
Martini says police then searched the area and found three victims suffering from stab wounds.
The injuries of the victims and suspect all range between serious and life-threatening, she said.
Police don’t yet know if there are additional suspects.
