Snowfall warning issued for Toronto Friday: Environment Canada

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the Toronto area Friday with heavy snow expected to have an impact on the evening commute.

The forecast calls for up to 15 centimetres of snow, the warning reads.

Light snow is expected to start falling in the morning but should become more intense in the afternoon and evening, and to taper off from west to east late Friday night.

David Rogers, senior meteorologist with Environment Canada, said the snowfall may be the heaviest the Toronto area has seen so far this year.

“We haven’t had much more than 10 cm so far this winter,” Rogers told CBC News.

The snow could reduce visibility in some areas where the snow is heavier, Environment Canada said. Peak snowfall rates of 2 centimetres per hour are possible.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” the federal weather agency said.

There is also a risk of freezing rain for areas near Lake Erie Friday evening, it added.

The snowfall warning comes days after the official start of spring in Toronto was marked earlier this week.

“March can definitely be a winter month, it’s not that surprising given how little winter weather we seemed to have throughout the actual winter months,” Rogers said.

“I’m not too surprised to see that mother nature has one last waff of winter weather for us.”
