Strike by Edmonton city workers postponed 24 hours to Friday morning

A strike by thousands of Edmonton civic employees that was expected to begin Thursday morning has been delayed by 24 hours, according to the city and the union representing workers.

More than 5,000 members of Civic Service Union 52 (CSU 52) were expected to walk off the job at 11 a.m. Thursday, but in a last-minute move the strike was postponed.

A spokesperson for CSU 52 confirmed to Global News on Thursday morning that the strike action has been delayed for 24 hours, to 11 a.m. Friday.

In a joint statement to members Thursday morning, the city and CSU 52 said they are “engaging in further collective bargaining.”

“The city and CSU 52 agree that the strike notice served by CSU 52 on March 11, 2024 will be amended, such that the new start date and time for the strike will be 11 a.m, on Friday, March 15, 2024,” the statement read in part.

The statement was signed by city manager Andre Corbould and CSU 52 president Lanny Chudyk.

The looming strike is expected to have a major impact on several city services, from rec centres and libraries to city attractions and overall customer service (including 311 service).

Edmonton’s public libraries have announced plans to close during the strike, which would involve library staff as well as administrative staff for the Edmonton Police Service and the municipal government.

Those preparing to strike include emergency 911 operators as well as those who conduct criminal record checks and firearms renewals.

Affected city staff include help-line operators, recreation centre staff, accounting employees and clerks.

Fire and rescue, transit, construction, snow-clearing and waste collection will continue.

The union has not had a contract since 2020 and is looking for a three-year deal that would cover up to 2023 with a five per cent raise.
