Counterfeit money being used to scam online sellers, York police warn

Police are warning the people of York Region about a pattern they’re seeing in the area of counterfeit money being used to scam online sellers.
Since October, York police say there have been 14 incidents where high-value items being sold on online buy-and-sell sites were purchased by suspects using $100 Canadian bills that were later determined to be counterfeit.
In most cases, the bills were found to have serial numbers GJR6710018 and GJR710022, as well as the words “PROP MONEY” printed in the window, police said in a release Thursday.
Police are providing tips for online sellers to spot counterfeit currency:
- Inspect serial numbers and the window of bills when accepting cash.
- The portrait in the window should change colour and match the main portrait.
- When the bill is observed through a small, bright light source, tiny numbers should be visible in the maple leaf window.
- The ink should feel raised when running your finger over the main portrait.
Anyone with information about the counterfeit currency is asked to contact York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau.
