Sarah May Curd was testing her trivia chops with fellow Jonas Brothers fans at a Toronto bar on Tuesday when she heard two roaring screams in quick succession.
“We thought the girls were just getting excited about somebody getting an answer right in trivia. And then, all of a sudden, the whole restaurant just erupted in screams,” Curd told As It Happens host Nil Koksal.
“Then you saw all the boys walk in, and it was just pure shock.”
The boys in question were none other than Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas, the pop trio known as the Jonas Brothers.
While in town to shoot a Christmas movie, the brothers found out there was a nearby trivia night based on Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, the Disney Channel musical TV movies that helped propel them into superstardom.
“What better way to end the night than by surprising some people,” Joe said in a video posted on the Jonas Brothers YouTube page. “Hopefully, they’ll get excited. We’ll see.”
When the three men entered Hemingway’s, a restaurant and bar in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood, the jam-packed crowd of mostly women went wild, including Curd.
“I think I blacked out a little bit,” she said. “I was not calm. I will be honest with you, I fully convinced myself that if I ever saw them, I would remain quite calm. I did not.”
The trio took the mic to thank their fans and posed a trivia question before heading out.
“It felt a lot longer than it was. We’re like, they were there for like a good 10 minutes. And we checked our timestamps of our videos. They were maybe there for a minute and a half,” Curd said. “But time stopped.”
Rob Tersigni, general manager of Hemingway’s, says it’s not unheard of for celebrities to pop in, but this unexpected appearance was “truly a standout moment” that delighted staff and patrons alike.
“Their presence electrified the entire atmosphere,” Tersigni told CBC in an email. “They were absolute class acts.”
Curd, a self-styled “Jonatic” — or JoBros fan — says she’s been all in on the Jonas Brothers since she first saw 2008’s Camp Rock. The movie centres on an aspiring singer, played by Demi Lovato, who attends a high-end music camp at a discounted rate because her mother picks up a job catering there.
“I was like, ‘Dad, you’re going to need to take me to a [Jonas Brothers] show immediately,’ and he did,” she said.
Despite her longtime love for the brothers and films, she admits she and her team did not do particularly well at trivia, coming in 20th out of 30.
“Not for lack of knowledge, I would say, but for lack of focus.”
