Maahir Dosani, 15, identified as boy killed in Toronto school stabbing

A Grade 11 student killed in a triple stabbing at a Toronto high school Tuesday afternoon is being remembered as “conscientious” and “respectful.”

Fifteen-year-old Maahir Dosani was killed and two other teens, ages 14 and 16, were injured shortly after school ended at 3 p.m. during a fight on the track at Victoria Park Collegiate Institute, near Victoria Park Avenue and Parkwoods Village Drive.

Nineteen-year-old Ahmed Rafin was arrested nearby and has been charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court Wednesday and is due back next week.

“Maahir was a conscientious student, who was respectful… and participated fully in class,” said the Toronto District School Board’s director of education Colleen Russell-Rawlins.

Russell-Rawlins said the stabbing is believed to have taken place about 20 minutes after school ended for the day.

She said the accused is a former TDSB student, but said he did not attend Victoria Park CI.

In a news release issued Wednesday morning, police said they located Dosani outside the school with stab wounds to the torso. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was pronounced dead.

The two other teens stabbed were also also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They have since been treated and released from hospital.

“There is no worse circumstance for us as educators. So many of us are caregivers in our lives and so we can appreciate what Maahir’s family and the family of the injured students must be thinking and feeling right now and our hearts are with them,” Russell-Rawlins said.

Police say the three victims were students at the school.

Const. Laura Brabant told CBC News that officers are now trying to figure out exactly what happened before the stabbing took place.

“Any student that attends school, they expect it to be a safe place where they can be, and this is just absolutely a horrific situation … it’s very tragic for everybody involved,” she said.

Homicide investigators are asking the public to share any photos or video that were shot before, during, or after the incident.

The high school was placed in a hold and secure position after the stabbing.

According to the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), the school opened Wednesday with a team of social workers and grief counsellors on hand to provide support for staff and students.

“We filled the building with caring adults who are all there to support and be there for the kids and for the staff,” said TDSB spokesperson Shari Schwartz-Maltz.
