Man arrested during protests near Thornhill synagogue

A man has been taken into custody following protests near a synagogue in Thornhill, Ont. Sunday morning.

York Regional Police said they were expecting more than 100 protesters to gather near Clarke Avenue W. and Bathurst Street, according to a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Police confirmed to CBC Toronto that the protest started off as a pro-Palestinian rally. Counter protests later started in the same area, they said.

Investigators say that a man, who allegedly brought a nail gun on site, was taken into custody after a “confrontation” involving one of the protesters. Officers are still investigating whether charges will be laid, police said.

In an update on X, police said no injuries have been reported, and there is no risk to public safety at this time.

Police advise commuters to avoid the area.
