Toronto teen ID’d as victim of fatal Labour Day shooting
Toronto police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting in the city’s northwest as 15-year-old Mario Giddings.
Police identified the teen in a news release Tuesday, saying he was found in a plaza on Trethewey Drive at Black Creek Drive around 7:44 p.m. Monday.
A dark-coloured vehicle was seen entering the plaza that night and a gun was fired before the vehicle sped away, according to the news release.
Giddings was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
At a news conference Tuesday, investigators said multiple rounds were fired during the incident, and they believe Giddings was targeted. Officers are in the area Tuesday looking for security camera video.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident to reach out, or contact Crime Stoppers.
Speaking at the news conference, Insp. Paul Krawczyk said it was a violent weekend in Toronto, with 11 shootings having taken place — including three homicides, three shootings with injuries and five firearm discharges.
There are no indications those incidents were linked, he said.
“I appreciate that events like these can spread fear in the community,” Krawczyk said.
“We continue to work closely with the city and our community partners in order to get to the root cause of the issue.”
