Police-involved shooting in Orillia, Ont., leaves 1 dead, officer seriously hurt, SIU investigating

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating a police-involved shooting in Orillia, Ont., that has left one person dead and an officer seriously injured.

The shooting happened on Cochrane Street on Thursday shortly before 2 p.m.

Ontario Provincial Police’s Orillia detachment said in a news release on Thursday that police responded to a report of a fight at a home on Barrie Road shortly before 2 p.m.

After officers arrived at the scene, they located an “involved individual” on Cochrane Street.

“During the interaction, an officer was stabbed and sustained serious injuries. The officer discharged their firearm and as a result, the individual was pronounced deceased at hospital,” the OPP said in the release.

The officer who was stabbed is now in stable condition, the OPP said.
