SIU investigating death of man who went into ‘medical distress’ in York police custody

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a 33-year-old man, who was discovered in “medical distress” early Wednesday morning while locked in a York Region police holding cell.

The man had turned himself in at a York Regional Police station in Richmond Hill on Tuesday, according to a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) news release.

He was there in connection to a warrant for breach of probation, the SIU says.

Per the release, the man was then taken into custody and put into a cell. Early Wednesday morning, around 1 a.m. police at the station noticed he was in medical distress, it says.

Officers provided “medical attention,” and the SIU says the man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The SIU says a post-mortem is scheduled for Thursday, and anyone with information related to this case should get in touch.
