TTC reverses decision to scrap free public Wi-Fi at subway stations

The TTC board voted Tuesday to continue providing free public Wi-Fi at subway stations, reversing a decision from earlier this month that sparked plenty of reaction.

The service will now continue at least until studies are done on the impact of the move on vulnerable riders — including youth, women and people with low-income.

TTC staff will also consider a plan to establish a pilot for free Wi-Fi on bus and street platforms, as well as bays at stations, according to the motion, put forward by Coun. Josh Matlow.

Earlier in September, the TTC announced it was cancelling the service, citing a steep drop in rider usage along with reliability, security and cost concerns.

At the time, the transit agency aid it would cost $17 million to upgrade the infrastructure.
