Woman, 18, charged after allegedly threatening shooting at Oshawa school on Snapchat

An 18-year-old Whitby, Ont. woman has been charged with uttering threats after allegedly saying in a Snapchat message that she wanted to start a shooting at an Oshawa school, Durham police say.

Officers arrested the woman on Thursday at the Durham College campus, where she is a student, Durham Regional Police said in a news release on Friday.

Police said they executed a search warrant at the woman’s home following her arrest and seized 18 firearms, five airsoft guns and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

According to police, the weapons were acquired and stored lawfully.

Police said they learned of the Snapchat message through the RCMP, who said they intercepted a message that “indicated a female’s desire to initiate a shooting” at an Oshawa school.

Investigators then traced the message back to the woman, police said.

The woman was held for a bail hearing.

Anyone with information is urged to call police. Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online.
