Woman who died after car went into Lake Ontario was ‘always with a smile’, colleague says
A woman who died Sunday after being pulled from a vehicle that drove into Lake Ontario at Ashbridges Bay is being remembered as warm, caring person and hardworking colleague.
Agnesa Shukulli, 25, moved to Canada from Albania with her sister in November 2021 with “dreams of creating a better life,” according to a GoFundMe page in her memory started by Kristian Paksu.
“Agnesa was a kind and beautiful soul who touched the hearts of everyone she met,” the GoFundMe page reads. “She was a loving daughter, a caring sister, and a friend who made everyone feel special.”
Donations will go toward bringing her body back to Albania to her family, the page says. So far, the GoFundMe has raised over $68,000.
A 23-year-old man from Oakville has been charged with dangerous operation causing death, Toronto police said on Tuesday.
The accused and Shukulli were both in the vehicle when it entered Ashbridges Bay. While he managed to get out of the car, police officers had to extract Shukulli.
She was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she later died.
‘She was making your day,’ colleague says
Shukulli worked at Serrano Bakery, a popular spot in East York in Toronto. The bakery released a statement on Facebook Wednesday, writing that she was a “beloved member” of their team.
“Agnes Shukulli was not only a dedicated colleague but also a cherished friend who brought warmth, kindness and joy to everyone she met,” the statement read.
Evangelos Dzanos worked with Shukulli at Serrano Bakery. He said Shukulli was “always with a smile.”
“She was making your day,” he said.
He said Shukulli was a hardworking colleague who made the bakery a better place for everyone.
While Dzanos knew her for around eight months, others at the bakery had known her for several years, he said.
“[When] you know someone for years and suddenly she’s gone, a part of yourself is gone too,” he said. “We need time to process everything.”
