Children suffer minor injuries after school bus, pickup truck crash in RM of Lorne: RCMP

A school bus with 14 children on board crashed with a pickup truck in the rural municipality of Lorne southwest of Winnipeg on Thursday morning.

Pembina Valley RCMP were called to the collision about 130 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg around 8:30 a.m., police said in a news release Thursday.

They found the school bus on its side with the pickup truck in a ditch on the southeast side of the intersection of Road 28 N. and Road 66 W.

Officers believe the pickup was travelling south on Road 66 W. when it crashed with the rear driver’s side of the school bus, which was going east on Road 28 N.

The 14 children travelling on the bus, students from kindergarten to Grade 11, got out of the bus before police arrived.

The students sustained minor injuries but were taken to hospital as a precaution, RCMP said. Some were taken to Winnipeg for further assessment.

The driver of the pickup, a 17-year-old boy, also sustained minor injuries but has been released from hospital.

Charges under the Highway Traffic Act are pending for the driver of the pickup truck, said RCMP, who continue to investigate.
