City committee approves new Sikh temple for northwest Winnipeg

Plans for a new Sikh temple to serve the growing community in northwest Winnipeg passed a vote at City Hall on Friday.

The new three-storey Gurdwara Kalgidhar Darbar Sikh Temple will be up to five times as large as the existing one on King Edward Street in the North Inkster area.

Terry Kozak, the consultant on the project, said the community had outgrown its existing building.

“What that will provide to the community and for the gurdwara will be felt, you know, generations down the road,” Kozak  said in an interview.

“And to have this type of green space just along King Edward, everyone that will drive by will easily see the curb appeal of the new project.”

Kozak says the existing temple is about 7,000 square feet, while the new one will be around 35,000, with capacity for between 400 and 500 people.

Kozak became involved with the project because of a connection to the gurdwara’s president, Gurpal Bhullar. Their sons went to the same school.

Bhullar says the Sikh community in the area is excited to have more space to get together.

“This area is growing. We need it for weddings, other community functions,” he said in an interview.

Northwest Winnipeg has a large and growing Sikh population. According to the latest census from 2021, Sikh people made up 17.3 per cent of the population of the Seven Oaks community area, where the temple is located, the second-largest religious-affiliated group behind Catholics.

The gurdwara was fortunate to have a large empty green space on which to build the new temple, Kozak said.

The Lord Selkirk-West Kildonan Committee unanimously approved the plans. Kozak told the committee Old Kildonan Coun. Devi Sharma had requested an additional 30 parking stalls be added to the plans, to meet the demand, bringing the total to 283 stalls.

It will also retain two large, triangular-shaped green spaces to the north and west of the new temple.

Sharma said during the meeting she was happy to see the plans reach this point, after many years of working on it with the gurdwara.

“It’s a great plan, and it looks beautiful,” she said.

After the plans are approved by city council, Kozak says the next step will be to raise funds for the project. The final cost estimate is still in the process of refinement, but is expected to be in the millions of dollars, he said.
