Driver of stolen vehicle hit street light, building, rammed cruiser: Winnipeg police
An 18-year-old driving a stolen vehicle crashed into a commercial building, after hitting a light pole and ramming a police vehicle early Saturday morning, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.
A patrolling police canine unit saw an Acura MDX, which had been reported stolen from a parking lot Thursday, driving eastbound on McDermot Avenue toward Arlington Street around 2 a.m. Saturday, according to police.
With help from general patrol officers, police followed the vehicle as it went southbound on Arlington Street in an attempt to evade police and struck a street light, police said in a news release on Saturday.
As the canine unit approached, the vehicle rammed into the police vehicle and sped away from the area.
The driver then lost control of the vehicle and hit a commercial building on the 900 block of Notre Dame Avenue, east of McPhillips Streets, police said.
The driver fled on foot, but was arrested after a short foot chase, according to police.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, but damage to the building was estimated at $30,000, police said.
The 18-year-old Winnipeg man was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and four counts of failing to comply with conditions of a sentence.
He was detained in custody.
