Former Winnipeg city councillor nominated as PC candidate for Transcona byelection
A former Winnipeg city councillor will represent Manitoba’s Progressive Conservative party in an upcoming byelection.
Shawn Nason will be the party’s candidate in the byelection underway in east Winnipeg’s Transcona riding, the Tories said in a news release on Friday.
Nason served as Transcona’s city councillor from 2018-22, when he was the only incumbent councillor defeated in an election that saw former Transcona councillor Russ Wyatt return to the role.
Nason also previously worked as a special legislative assistant to provincial ministers Scott Fielding (Families) and Eileen Clarke (Indigenous and Northern Relations) and as constituency manager for former federal Conservative MP Lawrence Toet, the PC party’s news release said.
Nason has also served on the boards of the Transcona Historical Museum, the Rotary Club of Winnipeg East, the Oxford Heights Community Club (OHCC) and the FC Northwest Soccer Club, along with his children’s Montessori and school associations.
He’s also been a coach in Transcona Nationals football and OHCC hockey and basketball, and serves as a youth coach and soccer co-ordinator in northeast Winnipeg, the news release said.
The byelection was called earlier this week to replace the riding’s former MLA Nello Altomare, who died last month at 61. He had been diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer in 2019, shortly after being elected to his first term in office.
Altomare became the minister of education and early childhood learning following the NDP’s win in the 2023 election, but he took a medical leave from his role in October. Tracy Schmidt took over his portfolio on an acting basis and was sworn in as the new minister in late January.
Voters in Transcona will head to the polls on March 18.
The Manitoba NDP have nominated educator Shannon Corbett as its candidate, the party previously announced at a news conference. Corbett prevailed over union organizer Roque Anonuevo to secure the NDP nomination.
Corbett is a lifelong Transconian who has worked in the River East Transcona School Division as a teacher, and as vice-principal at Bernie Wolfe School and Transcona Collegiate, she said at the news conference.
The Green Party of Manitoba has decided it won’t enter a candidate in the race out of respect for Altomare’s passing, party president and co-deputy leader Dennis Bayomi previously said in an emailed statement.
