‘It’s not right,’ son says after 83-year-old mother brutally beaten while out buying milk

The family of an 83-year-old woman who was brutally assaulted in Winnipeg on Tuesday afternoon say more needs to be done to combat rampant drug use and improve safety.

Victoria Comeau, 83, was attacked while she was going to buy milk near her residence at Elgin Avenue and Ellen Street, in the north Winnipeg Centennial neighbourhood, her son Joseph Fourre said at a Wednesday news conference called by the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.

“To brutally beat an elderly woman like that, 83 years old, it’s not right,” said Fourre, who suspects the man responsible was under the influence of drugs.

“I think we need to bring this awareness that our communities and our neighbourhoods are not being safe under our present strategies.”

Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Chief Angela Levasseur, who spoke at Wednesday’s news conference, said the elder was punched in the back of the head and face, and was repeatedly kicked. She suffered internal bleeding and other serious injuries, including a shattered pelvis, and was taken to hospital after the incident.

Levasseur argued that Manitoba’s harm-reduction strategies are not working, saying that drug users are being given the opportunity to use freely in areas where vulnerable elders live.

Winnipeg police say they’re investigating the incident.

During the press conference, Fourre also thanked a passerby who jumped out of his vehicle to help, saying the man saved his mother’s life.
