2 new tennis courts set to open in south Winnipeg by August to meet demand of ‘fastest growing area’
Residents living near Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park in Winnipeg’s Waverley West will be able to hit new tennis and pickleball courts by August.
Masroor Khan, president of the South Winnipeg Community Centre, was at a sod-turning for the new courts Saturday. He says there is an increasing demand for tennis and pickleball courts in the growing community.
“We listen to the voices of the residents for enhanced recreation facilities in this area and we are together turning this vision into reality,” Khan said.
Demographics are changing fast in south Winnipeg, especially when it comes to immigration— More than 65 per cent of residents identified as visible minorities, and 43 per cent identified as immigrants.
Khan says the community centre listened to newcomers to see what they needed and wanted in their neighbourhood, and tennis courts were a common request.
The park improvements include two new tennis courts with pickleball court lines, landscaping, benches and fencing.
The project cost is $293,500, with $59,000 funded through the 2023 Parks and Recreation Enhancement Program, $142,000 from the Land Dedication Reserve Fund and $92,500 from the Province of Manitoba’s Building Sustainable Communities Program.
Waverley MLA David Pankratz says projects like this get off the ground when community comes together with great ideas.
He called it a very exciting project that will support residents to pursue healthy lives and more recreational options in the neighbourhood.
‘People moving in from all over’
Construction of park improvements at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park is expected to start this week and be completed in mid-August.
Coun. Janice Lukes (Waverley West) says the community is one of the fastest expanding areas in the city.
“We’ve got people moving in from all over the world with all kinds of interests,” Lukes said.
There is one tennis court in Waverley West that was built about eight years ago. Since then, there have been many requests for more, Lukes said.
They are working with Tennis Manitoba to discuss the possibility of having the option to book court times, but Lukes says the courts will remain open for the public the majority of the time.
Khan says other projects are planned for the community this summer.
“South Winnipeg is the fastest growing area in … as far as immigration is concerned,” he said. “We’re constructing these facilities and listening to the demands of the newcomers and diverse demographics, and making sure that we meet all those demands.”
