Five people were injured and another person was arrested after a fire in Winnipeg’s West End on Thursday night.

Emergency crews were called to a building on Sargent Avenue, near Toronto Street, around 9:30 p.m. In addition to several fire trucks, there were about a half-dozen police cars present, with a man handcuffed in the backseat of one.

One person was taken from a suite in the building — an apartment block with businesses on the main level — and rushed to hospital.

Four police officers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Police have released no information on the reason for the arrest and whether any charges have been laid.

The city has not said anything about the fire, its cause or damage.
