Manitoba is projecting a higher than anticipated deficit for the year.
A fiscal update document says for 2024/2025, the province expects a shortfall of $1.3 billion.
That’s an increase from a September deficit forecast, which was $796 million.
The fiscal update says the largest contributor to the increase is a $438 million over-expenditure in health.
It says a lot of that is “driven” by a $230 million cost overrun in the regional health authorities.
The province says it has conducted financial audits of several regional health authorities and is set to release a report with findings in the new year.
The 2023/2024 year ended with a deficit of just under $2 billion.
