Manitoba police watchdog investigating after man breaks leg after being hit by Taser

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after Winnipeg police fired a Taser at an armed man who then fell on the ice and broke his leg.

Officers were called at around 2:40 a.m. on Thursday for reports of an argument between a man and a woman at home in the 400 block of Furby Street south of Ellice Avenue, police said in a news release Friday.

Police said they found the man armed with an edged weapon outside the home. Officers asked him to drop the weapon, but the man started walking toward them, so they shot him with a Taser.

The Independent Investigation Unit, which investigates serious incidents involving police, said the man fell into the ice after he was shot, fracturing his right tibia and fibula.

He was taken to the Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg, where he was released on an undertaking while waiting to be treated by hospital staff, police said.

The IIU said a broken leg is considered a serious injury, and they are mandated to investigate. They are asking witnesses with information or video footage from the incident to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
