28-year-old shot man with gun he coerced woman to buy, forced her to offer sexual services: Winnipeg police

A man who was recently released from an Alberta prison has been arrested again after he coerced a woman to buy a firearm that he later used to shoot another man, and also confined and assaulted the woman, forcing her to advertise sexual services, Winnipeg police say.

The 28-year-old man is facing multiple charges after the string of crimes ended in his arrest following a chase during which he tried to escape by jumping about three storeys down from a parkade earlier this week, Winnipeg police said in a Thursday news release.

An investigation by the police service’s domestic violence unit determined that while he was in an Edmonton prison, the man contacted the woman and coerced her to get a weapons acquisition licence, police say.

After his release, he travelled to Winnipeg, contrary to the conditions of his release order. He and the woman met on Aug. 14 at a retail store on Sterling Lyon Parkway, where he instructed her to buy a semi-automatic rifle and ammunition for him, police say.

Police also allege that during the month of August, he forced the woman to advertise sexual services online and give him the income. She complied because she was physically assaulted, forcibly confined and “under constant watch” by the man, according to police.

Back-alley argument led to shooting: police

Police say that around noon on Tuesday, the 28-year-old man got into an argument in a back lane on the 200 block of Young Street, between Broadway and Portage Avenue, with a 48-year-old man he knew.

The 28-year-old used the rifle that had been purchased earlier to shoot the older man in the lower body.

The victim was taken to hospital in unstable condition but later upgraded to stable. The 28-year-old fled, police say.

He was spotted by police around 2:30 p.m. that day around Carlton Street and Graham Avenue. Officers chased him on foot to a multi-level parkade in the 200 block of Graham Avenue where, in an attempt to escape, he jumped about 30 feet (rougly nine metres) to the ground, injuring himself, and was then arrested, according to police.

During the arrest, officers found about $800 in cash and 9.5 grams of fentanyl, police say.

A further investigation by the major crimes unit also determined the man was connected with a robbery that took place on Aug. 11, during which he drew a knife on a 51-year-old man at a restaurant in the 1400 block of Ellice Avenue, according to police.

The 28-year-old Winnipeg man now faces more than two dozen charges, including forcible confinement, assault, procuring a person to provide sexual services, two counts of robbery and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

He also faces numerous firearms-related charges, including discharging a firearm with intent.
