A new dual-track French immersion and English school will be built in southwest Winnipeg to serve the growing community of Prairie Pointe, the Manitoba government announced Wednesday.
It’s the second new Winnipeg school announced this week, after the province said on Monday that it will build one on Devonshire Drive W. in Transcona.
“Our government knows just how important it is to invest in children and their education,” Education Minister Tracy Schmidt said Monday at South Pointe School, less than two kilometres from where the kindergarten to Grade 8 one in Prairie Pointe one will go.
It is slated for an area on Castlebrook Drive between Landover and Skyline drives, and will have space for over 600 students as well as 74 infant and preschool child-care spaces.
It will be designed with potential future expansion in mind to accommodate enrolment growth, Schmidt said.
“This investment will positively benefit our students and their families and foster a bright future for the community,” said Shelley Amos, superintendent of the Pembina Trails School Division.
“Schools strengthen communities [and] this new school in Prairie Pointe will increase the vitality of this community.”
Design work for both new schools is set to begin in the coming months, with construction to start in early 2026 and a targeted opening date of September 2027.
