Severe thunderstorm watch, warning issued for large swath of southeastern Manitoba

Parts of southeastern Manitoba are under severe thunderstorm watches and warnings on Saturday morning, Environment and Climate Change Canada says.

Meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms which are capable of creating very strong winds, heavy rain and hail ranging from toonie-sized to the size of a Ping-Pong ball.

That line stretches from Cat Lake south to Prawda and is moving to the northeast at roughly 30 km/h, Environment Canada said in an alert issued around 9:30 a.m. CT.

The regions under the severe thunderstorm warning issued shortly after 8 a.m. are:

  • L.G. of Pinawa including Seven Sisters Falls.
  • R.M. of Alexander including Powerview-Pine Falls.
  • R.M. of Brokenhead including Beausejour and Garson.
  • R.M. of East St. Paul including Birds Hill.
  • R.M. of Hanover including Steinbach, Niverville and Grunthal.

  • R.M. of Stuartburn including Zhoda Vita and Sundown.

Flash floods and water pooling on roads can be caused by heavy rains, ECCC says. Large hail can damage property and injure people. Strong winds can damage weak buildings, snap branches off of trees and even overturn large vehicles.

Intense lightning is possible with a thunderstorm, and so are tornadoes. ECCC advises people to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when approaching or occurring thunderstorms are likely to create or are already creating either large hail, damaging winds and heavy rains.

Severe thunderstorm watch

A severe thunderstorm watch was also issued for the area on Saturday morning, as a line of thunderstorms over the Red River Valley are progressing eastward.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are likely to create thunderstorms that can produce either large hail, damaging winds or heavy downpours.
