Winnipeg man faces multiple weapons charges after unprovoked hammer attack on city bus: police
A 30-year-old man faces multiple weapons charges after he allegedly attempted to assault a Winnipeg Transit passenger with a hammer on Monday.
Police were called around 10:15 a.m. with a report of an assault aboard a bus at Disraeli Street and Sutherland Avenue.
Police were told a man pulled out a hammer and tried to strike a man in his 20s who was on the bus without provocation. The attacker then moved to the front of the bus, where he began yelling and tackled another passenger in his 40s, police said in a Tuesday news release.
Other passengers aboard the bus tried to intervene. One person, fearing for their safety, used bear spray in an attempt to stop the assault, according to police.
The attacker then ran off the bus. Police later arrested a suspect on the Disraeli Bridge.
The passengers left the bus because of the bear spray, which was seized by police. None of the passengers were injured, but the bus required decontamination.
The 30-year-old has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and being in possession of a weapon, police said.
He was detained in custody.
