Man charged with arson, manslaughter after woman dies from injuries in Winnipeg townhouse fire

A woman has died in hospital and a man faces arson and manslaughter charges after multiple people were rescued from a blaze at a townhouse in Winnipeg’s Tyndall Park area a week ago.

Nirmaljeet Kaur, 30, and a 29-year-old man were seriously injured during a fire at a townhouse on Keewatin Street, between Burrows and Tyndall avenues, around 3:30 a.m. on June 26, Winnipeg police say in a news release on Wednesday.

Both of them were asleep when their suite became engulfed in flames after someone intentionally set a couch on fire against the building. They were sent to hospital in critical condition.

Although the man was later upgraded to stable condition, he suffered life-altering injuries. Kaur remained in critical condition.

Izak Sararas, 27, has been charged with two counts of arson with a disregard for human life, four counts causing property damage and robbery, police say. He was detained in custody.

He was also charged with manslaughter after Kaur died from her injuries on Sunday. Kaur’s family has been notified.

Investigators believe the same man was involved in a robbery before the townhouse fire, as well as three additional fires afterwards.

About half an hour before the townhouse fire, police say the accused confronted a 30-year-old man at a nearby gas station to demand a cigarette before punching him and leaving. The victim informed police of the incident but did not need medical treatment.

The man is also accused of setting three garbage bins on fire shortly after the townhouse fire.

Eight people were rescued from the townhouse, district fire Chief Kevin Hay previously said.

The front of the townhouse is lined by tall trees along the public sidewalk, which created an added challenge in fighting the fire, he said.

The fire was declared under control around shortly before 5 a.m.
